Ironman 70.3 raced in style

Yeppoon Ironman 70.3 is a fantastic event! The setting is stunning, the locals welcoming. Fellow competitors displayed great sportsmanship, encouraging one another on the challenging 21km run course. “Looking good mate” and “Keep strong mate” exchanged between both genders.

I love everything about racing. The preparation, the community, the concentrated effort, and the post-race relaxation! This Ironman 70.3 was a 5:39hr effort for me. Fastest guy on the day raced 3:56hr and the last man across the line was at 7:27hr. The most inspirational athlete completed the 2km swim, 90km bike, and 21km run in a time of 5:57hr at 74years! Whoop, puts my time in perspective!

Really though, racing is about being my best and gratitude that I’m able to. I love the boundary pushing that happens in fair competition and recognise how personal achievements in sport encourage insight and development in all other aspects of my life.

There were a couple of things brand new at this race:

1. Going package free meant that I made gels and did not consume anything pre-packaged! What did I carry for nutrition? Hand made bars – see recipe – (I added chocolate covered coffee beans), an agave gel on the bike and a chia on the run (a mixture of chia seeds, lemon, and honey). That’s it! I do have some tweaking to do and must incorporate more in training, but bottom line it was fine!

2. My new partner is a gorgeous, fast and light as, weapon. The UNOVELO TT basically rode the course for me as I focused on keeping up! This is by far the fastest bike I have ever ridden, and though I did not test it before the race, we fit like we’ve always ridden together. I love everything about this bike. UD monocoque frame and fork with an Easton Attack bar, Miss Tri saddle, MTB Stem, SRAM RED group set, and Hawk Racing Tubular 50mm. B-EAUT-A-FUL!

Check us out: Next race on the calendar is Elite Energy, Foster, October 18th. See you there! xK
